BOD POD
BOD POD is a body-composition system using air-displacement plethysmography. It determines body volume in an enclosed chamber, a different principle from BIA electrodes or DXA X-rays. The generic BOD POD designation does not identify a generation or optional equipment.
What the results tell you
BOD POD estimates fat and fat-free mass from body volume and mass. You sit in an enclosed chamber that derives volume from changes in air pressure, without electrical measurement or X-rays. The result is a whole-body two-compartment model, rather than a regional muscle map or bone density. The family name does not establish GS-X generation, capacity, paediatric options or software.
How the test works
Weight is recorded before chamber volume measurement. Together they determine body density, from which a model estimates fat and fat-free components. Sit quietly and follow breathing instructions. The protocol may include a lung-volume procedure. Air-displacement plethysmography is distinct from metabolic-rate or lung-performance testing.
When the test is useful
The method supports whole-body composition assessment using a principle other than BIA. Repeat the same protocol and obtain an explanation of fat and fat-free mass. It does not provide limb muscle distribution or bone density. Suitability depends on your question and ability to follow chamber-testing conditions.
Preparing for your visit
Clothing and hair affect volume measurement. Locations typically require minimal close-fitting clothing and a cap compressing hair; loose fabric can trap air. Obtain exact instructions for meals, exercise and removing jewellery. A study protocol following the manual required at least two hours without eating, drinking or exercise; confirm your location’s protocol.
Reading results and understanding limitations
Fat estimates depend on volume, weight and two-compartment model assumptions. Clothing, hair and procedure differences can shift results. Fat-free mass includes tissues other than muscle. BIA or DXA results are not directly interchangeable. The system alone does not diagnose disease, and generation and optional equipment must match the location’s actual configuration.
Choosing a testing location
Confirm generation, weight limit, clothing and any lung-volume procedure. For regional results or bone density, choose an examination using another method.
