Harpenden Skinfold Caliper
Harpenden is a mechanical caliper for skinfold-thickness measurement, with a 0–80 mm range and 0.2 mm dial graduation. Body-fat percentage is subsequently estimated using selected sites and an equation; the caliper does not directly measure muscle, water or bone density.
What the results tell you
Harpenden measures skinfold thickness in millimetres. Body-fat percentage is calculated from several sites using a selected protocol and equation. The manufacturer cites four-site Durnin–Womersley and three- or seven-site Jackson–Pollock approaches. A 0–80 mm range and 0.2 mm graduation describe the instrument, not the accuracy of the resulting fat percentage. Skinfold sums can also be tracked without conversion when the protocol stays consistent.
How the test works
The operator identifies protocol sites, lifts a skinfold and measures its thickness with the caliper. Repeat readings support quality control and calculation. This is anthropometry without electrodes or X-rays. An equation converts the sites into a composition estimate for a particular population; changing sites or equation can change the percentage.
When the test is useful
Skinfolds offer an accessible way to track subcutaneous-fat changes. Individual site readings and sums are useful records. Value depends on operator skill and consistent protocol. Water compartments, bone density and direct strength testing require other appropriate methods; the caliper does not provide them.
Preparing for your visit
Ask which sites are measured and wear clothing allowing access while preserving privacy. Plan follow-up under similar conditions and preferably with the same operator. Discuss sensitive skin and sites where a fold cannot safely be taken. Confirm that you receive site millimetres, sums and the equation used.
Reading results and understanding limitations
The caliper measures a subcutaneous fold rather than all internal fat. Site selection, fold technique, operator and equation suitability affect estimates. Dial graduation does not guarantee whole-body percentage accuracy. Different protocols cannot automatically form one trend. The instrument does not directly assess visceral fat, hydration, muscle strength or bone density.
Choosing a testing location
Ask about operator experience, site count and names, and the equation used. Retain millimetres, skinfold sums and protocol as well as any calculated fat percentage.
