Tanita BC-418MA

BC-418MA is a segmental body-composition analyser. An academic facility’s instrument description lists weight, body fat, fat-free mass and regional outputs. Check the exact device designation, including MA, when booking.

What the results tell you

BC-418MA reports weight, body fat, fat-free mass and regional results. Fat-free mass contains tissues other than muscle, so labels and units matter. A published study using this model illustrates that two BIA instruments need not produce interchangeable results. Findings in young men cannot be extended to every visitor or treated as a universal accuracy guarantee.

How the test works

You stand barefoot on the platform and, where provided, hold the hand contacts as instructed. The analyser records electrical impedance and uses equations with weight and other inputs to estimate composition. Fat and muscle are not separately weighed. Contact, posture and correctly entered height are part of the procedure.

When the test is useful

BC-418MA can support a personal fat and fat-free-mass trend with a consistent procedure. Regional outputs add context without testing limb function. Confirm the same model when linking earlier records. A difference between instruments may be technical rather than an actual body change.

Preparing for your visit

Obtain preparation instructions for the exact model and keep the time of day similar. Meals, exercise and hydration can affect results, making a post-workout reading poorly comparable with a rested visit. Maintain your usual hydration and record changed circumstances. Discuss electronic implants and other restrictions with the location using the device manual before testing.

Reading results and understanding limitations

BIA is an indirect estimate dependent on the model and conditions. A small change can reflect water or routine variability rather than fat loss. Results from different instruments are not a single interchangeable series. More frequencies or outputs alone do not establish greater accuracy. A report is not a standalone diagnosis, and estimated muscle quantity does not measure strength.

Choosing a testing location

Start a new baseline when moving from another analyser. Consistent equipment, procedure and interpretation are more useful for trends than comparing unrelated readings from two scales.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine BC-418MA results with another BIA scale?

Start a new baseline when moving from another analyser. Consistent equipment, procedure and interpretation are more useful for trends than comparing unrelated readings from two scales.

Can I compare results from another device?

They are not automatically one trend. Models can use different equations and procedures; establish a new baseline when changing instruments.
