Performance testing and spiroergometry
Spiroergometry and blood lactate testing describe the response to exercise and help inform training. Choose the specific method, sport and interpretation you need.

What the test measures
Spiroergometry monitors breathing during progressively increasing exercise. Measuring oxygen consumption differs from estimating VO₂ using power or a watch. Some analysers also measure CO₂; the current VO₂ Master manufacturer FAQ says its device does not. Lactate testing uses blood samples during exercise. A single sample after a test is not a lactate curve.
Choosing and booking
Check whether the test uses a treadmill, ergometer or your own bicycle and whether interpretation, training zones and a written report are included. A training test does not necessarily include a medical examination or fitness certificate. Discuss preparation and suitability for maximal testing with the provider before booking.
Using and comparing results
For comparisons over time, keep the protocol, sport, equipment and preparation similar. Retest prices may be conditional. A combined test during one visit differs from a programme with several visits.
Common questions
Is watch-estimated VO₂max the same result?
An estimate based on power and other data is not direct measurement of oxygen consumption through breathing. Check the actual method in the offer details.
