Resting metabolic rate measurement

Indirect calorimetry determines resting energy expenditure from measured breathing. Results can inform individual nutrition counselling.

What the test measures

RMR is resting energy expenditure. Calorimetry calculates it from respiratory data, usually oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production. Some methods use oxygen alone with additional assumptions. BMR estimated from BIA, weight or an equation is not this measurement.

Choosing and booking

Check whether the offer is actual calorimetry, a single test or a wider programme. Ask whether explanation, a report and a nutrition consultation are included. Follow the provider’s instructions for food, exercise and resting preparation.

Using and comparing results

Resting expenditure is not your total daily energy need: ordinary movement, training and other activities change that need. The result is therefore not a universal meal-plan prescription. Keep conditions similar when repeating the test.

Common questions

Does a standard InBody also measure RMR?

A BIA analyser may display calculated BMR. For measured resting expenditure, look for an explicit indirect calorimetry service.
